The County Approval Process Explained
What every Kenyan homeowner should know about getting plans approved — and how long it really takes.
Before you can break ground on any construction project in Kenya, your architectural and structural drawings must be approved by the relevant county government. The process is the same across most counties, with minor variations in documentation.
You'll need: a site plan, architectural drawings (floor plans, elevations, sections), structural drawings stamped by a registered structural engineer, a copy of the title deed, your ID, and the prescribed application form.
Approval typically takes 30 to 60 days in Nairobi, and 14 to 45 days in most other counties. NEMA approval may be required for larger developments.
Working with a firm that already has relationships with county planners — like Pemura — shortens the timeline significantly and avoids costly resubmissions.
